“We Are Stardust. We Are Golden.”

woodstock

I’ve been singing the song “Woodstock” in my head for a few days now. After doing a search on YouTube, I realized my song search for “We Are Stardust” was really “Woodstock”. But you know… life is for learning, and after that, I now know a lot about what happened at Yasgur’s Farm, Bethel, NY – August 1969.

But you know… life is for learning, and after my initial search, I now know a lot about Woodstock and about what happened at Yasgur’s Farm, Bethel, NY – August 1969.

Then, I looked for the lyrics to “Woodstock”.

After going deeper into the rabbit hole, I find that the lyrics that Crosby, Stills and Nash sang, were not the original lyrics. I have heard our Canadian Joni Mitchell sing “Woodstock” before, but I didn’t know she was the original creator of the song. I read that she wrote the song after the Woodstock experience was recounted to her by Graham Nash. Joni Mitchell is awesome and I have sung many of her original beautiful songs (to myself) over the years.

Crosby, Stills + Nash Version video with lyrics. You can sing along.

The “Woodstock” song version, that I was singing along with in my head, was performed by Matthew’s Southern Comfort. They adapted Joni’s original lyrics

Woodstock Concert (Aug 15,16,17,18 1969)

When I found this video, I watched Joni’s body language and heard her voices and could feel the ‘ache’ she experienced, by not being able to get to Woodstock.

Woodstock

Original lyrics by Joni Mitchell

I came upon a child of God
He was walking along the road
And I asked him, I said where are you goin
And this he told me

I’m going on down to Yasgur’s Farm
Gonna join in a rock’n roll band
I’m gonna camp out on the land and I’m gonna try ’n get my soul free

We are stardust, we are golden
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden

Well, then can I walk beside you?
I have come here to lose the smog,
And I feel to-be-a-cog in somethin’ turning

Well’n maybe it is the time a year
or maybe it’s the time of man
I don’t know – who I am
But you know life is for learning

We are stardust, we are golden
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden

By the time we got to Woodstock
We were half a million strong and
Everywhere there was song and a celebration

And I dreamed I saw the bombers
Riding shotgun in the sky
They were turning in-to butterflies
Above our nation

We are stardust, billon year old carbon, we are golden
Caught in the devils bargain
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden
